July Storm Prep: 6 Sump Pump Maintenance Tips Chicago Homeowners Can’t Ignore

July cloudbursts can dump two inches of rain on Chicagoland in a single afternoon—enough to turn an unprepared basement into an indoor pool. A healthy sump pump is your first line of defense against the water damage, mold, and foundation issues that follow a summer downpour. Spend an hour on the checklist below and rest easy when the next thunderstorm rolls through.

1. Test the float switch every month

Pour a bucket of water into the pit until the float rises; the pump should start immediately and shut off once the water is gone. No response—or odd grinding noises—means the switch or motor needs attention before the next storm.

2. Keep the discharge line clear & extended

Ensure the hose isn’t kinked and routes water at least 10 feet from the foundation. In July heat, lawn debris often clogs open pipe ends; add a screen cap and clear it after every mowing.

3. Deep-clean the sump pit

Sediment, gravel, and the odd Lego brick jam impellers and shorten pump life. Unplug the unit, remove it, vacuum out sludge, then rinse the liner. A clean pit helps the float move freely and reduces odors.

4. Inspect (and replace) the check valve

A $15 swing-style check valve stops expelled water from washing back into the pit. If yours rattles, leaks, or is more than five years old, swap it now to prevent short-cycling during a storm.

5. Verify backup power

July lightning strikes frequently knock out electricity. Test your battery backup or generator under load for at least 15 minutes and replace batteries older than three years. A powerless pump is no pump at all.

6. Schedule a pre-storm professional inspection

Annual inspections—ideally before the rainy season—catch hidden corrosion, wiring issues, or a failing motor long before water rises. Local technicians can also test amperage draw and suggest capacity upgrades for finished basements.

Don’t Wait for the Basement to Fill Up

A few proactive checks in early July can save thousands in water damage and insurance headaches. Need expert eyes or a same-day repair? Book professional sump pump services with Open-Drains and stay dry all summer long.
