Ways to Know if Your Drains Are Starting to Freeze

Learning when your pipes or drains are starting to freeze can help you avoid a costly repair bill. Frozen pipes and drains can burst, leaving you with a big mess to clean up and a pipe to replace. With the hardcore cold that Chicagoland is known for, it is essential to know the signs. That way, if you notice even the first sign of a problem, you can reach out to us for help.

Symptoms Your Pipes and Drains Are Starting to Freeze

The first sign you will notice that your pipes or drains are starting to freeze is nothing goes through them. If you are trying to use a faucet and nothing comes out, chances are your pipe is frozen. When nothing drains and you have not previously had clogging issues, this is likely the cause here as well.

Typically, once the pipes begin to freeze, you will also hear noises. This could be clanking around or even what sounds like groans. These noises come from the pipe or drain material expanding or contracting, depending on the material. It could also be a result of something trying to make its way through that pipe or drain, too.

Bulged drainpipes can also occur if your drains freeze. This happens when there is a clog that freezes, and the frozen material has nowhere to go. The metal of the pipe expands, causing what looks like a bubble in the pipe itself. When this happens, we nearly always have to replace the pipe. That is the only way of keeping the problem from happening again.

Struggling with Frozen Pipes and Drains Does Not Have to Define Your Winter

Pipes need to be kept warm, and this includes drainpipes. When they freeze, they can lead to several issues all-around your home. Instead of hoping it does not happen, take steps to keep your home or business protected.
