Why Is Water Backing Up in My Basement?

Do you have water backing up in your basement? It can damage walls, floors, carpeting, furniture, and other items you have in your basement. Water has the potential to ruin items that you can’t replace, such as old photo albums and heirlooms. If you notice water in your basement, get the problem fixed immediately to help reduce the damage.

However, you need to worry about more than just damage to your items. You also have to think about health risks. Water that backs up in the basement can also cause mold and mildew.

Common Causes of Water in the Basement

Water in the basement could come from rainwater or groundwater. It means that the water that’s typically outside of your home has found a way inside. This may stem from issues with the structure of the home, damaged basement windows, grading issues, or problems with downspouts and gutters.

However, the water could also come from an interior water leak from your plumbing. Look for signs of leaks and have them fixed. If the leak was the cause, fixing it will ensure there’s no more water coming into the basement, at least from that source.

Some homes, however, have bad subsurface drainage or clogged drains. Older homes might not even have a floor drainage system.

Don’t Go Into the Basement When It’s Flooded

When you notice a flood in the basement, it’s tempting to get down there to rescue your belongings. However, you first need to make sure the electricity is turned off to eliminate the risk of electrocution. Once the electricity is off, you can remove items, but don’t go into deep water if it’s a major flood down there. It could be a serious health risk.

If you have a sump pump, use that to help remove the water. Just keep in mind that removing the water doesn’t mean the problem is fixed. Until you know the cause and have it repaired, it could happen again and again.

Contact the Experts

It is often difficult for property owners to determine the cause of the water backup. The easiest way to ensure the problem is handled quickly and properly is by contacting Open Drains. The experts can inspect your basement and plumbing to find the problem and then fix it for you. The sooner you act, the better for your health and safety.
